1 ECD Activity: To Experiment

Have a play with this activity with The Emotional Culture Deck to help understand and manage the emotions that are important for a successful partnership:

  • Step 1: Understand the Partnership
Think about the main goals and benefits of the partnership. Understand what success looks like for both sides. This helps set the stage for the activity.

    Step 2: Recognise Current Feelings
Pick 3-5 feeling cards that show how you currently feel about the partnership. This helps you understand your current emotions, whether good or bad.

    Step 3: Identify Negative Feelings
Pick 3-5 feeling cards that show the emotions that might get in the way of the partnership being successful. These are the feelings you need to address.

    Step 4: Choose Desired Feelings
Pick 3-5 feeling cards that show the emotions needed for the partnership to be successful. These are the feelings that will help the partnership work well.

This activity is simple yet profound because we rarely set the emotional strategy of our partnerships. We often jump too quickly to the transactional and rational aspects, missing the critical emotional foundation that supports long-term relationship success.

ECD Partnerships Canvas + Workshop Plan

The ECD Partnerships Canvas is a crucial tool for teams to enhance collaboration by understanding their emotional and social dynamics. Acting as a 'Relationship Charter,' it helps partners define the emotions and behaviours for successful working relationships.

2 Pieces of Content:

To Inspire

Here are two pieces of content that I hope will help you see the world slightly differently and provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace.

Emotional Stakeholder Engagement

1. How to Lead in the Stakeholder Era. Focus on purpose and people. The profits will follow.

by Hubert Joly

"The world is clearly facing multifaceted crises: a health crisis, an economic crisis, a societal crisis, a racial crisis, an environmental crisis, and rising geopolitical tensions. In the face of these challenges, there is a growing realization that business and society cannot thrive if employees, customers, and communities are not healthy; if our planet is on fire; and if our society is fractured. More and more leaders believe that creating a better and sustainable future requires corporations to serve all their stakeholders — not just their investors — in a harmonious fashion. To make this transition, leaders need to evolve how they think about their mission and how they lead. According to Hubert Joly, the former chairman and CEO of Best Buy, we need leaders who, in both good times and bad, are keen to pursue a noble purpose, are ready to put people at the center of it, and are dedicated to creating an environment where every employee can blossom. In short, we need leaders who will embrace a declaration of interdependence. This is how we can create a more sustainable future. This is how business can be a force for good and do well by doing good."

Something I've been pondering...

"What's your emotional stakeholder strategy? How do you plan to connect emotionally with your stakeholders? There's a huge potential to create new value through these emotional connections, and companies should approach them strategically and scientifically. But many businesses either ignore the emotions of their stakeholders or rely on guesswork rather than a methodical approach. The result is they often lack clarity on what truly matters and don't bring their front-line people on the journey with them."

In this clip from our ECDTV channel, Jono Sole, Managing Director of Sole Landscapes, shares the motivation behind applying The ECD to develop a strong, healthy emotional culture in their growing business.

"I never would have expected to have operational procedures based on emotions. That was because we decide to put our people first and what they wanted to do and that came about organically from the process we went through using The Emotional Culture Deck. Our goal was to understand more about what we're about and how we can continue to develop our people. After the first day with The ECD it was immediately apparent we made the right decision to begin our journey with The ECD. It was a really rewarding day and was extremely beneficial, and the flow-on effects from what we started were so great for us."
