Inside Our Field Research on Employee Voice and Leadership

1 ECD
Activity

Navigating change in an organisation is not only about managing the internal team's emotions but also ensuring external stakeholders are aligned and onboard. This activity delves deep into understanding the emotional journey of stakeholders during change.

Use The ECD to answer this question:

How do we want our stakeholders to feel when faced with this change?

Step 1. Desired Emotion Selection: Identify your stakeholders impacted by the change. From The ECD, choose three black cards that represent the emotions you want stakeholders to feel regarding the change.

Step 2. Potential Red Flags: Still considering your stakeholders, select three white cards representing emotions you don't want them to feel but acknowledge they might.

Step 3. Card Discussion: Dive into why each stakeholder group's particular emotions (both pleasant and unpleasant) were chosen, reflecting on previous interactions or feedback.

Step 4. Strategy Formulation: For each selected emotion, brainstorm actions to evoke desired feelings and address the potential red flags and concerns.

2 Pieces of Content

by Kerry Roberts Gibson, Kate O'Leary, and Joseph R. Weintraub

Appreciation: The Human Connection We Often Miss.
One of the most beautiful truths about appreciation is its simplicity. It’s neither costly nor time-consuming. While anyone, from a newbie to a seasoned player, can sprinkle appreciation around, it's a game-changer when leaders champion it. Because when they do, a wave of appreciation radiates through, transforming culture in its wake. Dive in, connect, and appreciate – it's truly contagious.

2. The Stoics were right – emotional control is good for
the soul

Over the past three years, I've immersed myself in the teachings of Stoic philosophy. This journey has revealed a profound truth: before leading and managing others effectively, one must begin the journey to learn the strategies to master one's own emotions. Stoicism is equipping me with tools to refine my self-leadership and emotional strategy.

Something I've been pondering...

Leaders often prioritise strategic decision-making, yet many overlook the significance of being emotionally strategic. For those not intentionally shaping an emotional culture strategy, there's a risk of unintentionally suppressing team emotions, leading to unforeseen consequences. The most effective leaders recognise and deliberately craft a strategy centred around emotions within their teams.
