By identifying and understanding these emotions, leaders can take targeted actions to manage undesired feelings and foster a more supportive emotional culture.

Step 1: Pose the Question
Ask yourself: "How do I imagine my team are feeling right now, faced with this dilemma?"

Step 2: Choose ECD Feelings Cards
From The Emotional Culture Deck, select the black and white feeling cards that you believe represent how your team might be feeling.

Step 3: Share a Story
Discuss a scenario or story that could be causing your team to experience these particular emotions.

Step 4: Identify Behaviours
Examine the behaviours that may be manifesting in your team due to the presence of these emotions.

Step 5: Leadership Actions
Consider what actions you can take as a leader to help your team manage any undesired emotions they are currently experiencing.

Step 6: Foster Desired Emotions
Select cards from The Emotional Culture Deck that represent the emotions you wish to cultivate within your team to better navigate through the dilemma at hand.

2 Pieces of Content

To Inspire

Here are two pieces of content that I hope will help you see the world slightly differently and provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace.

Emotion

1. All the Feels: How Companies Can Benefit from Employees’ Emotions

New research from Wharton's Michael Parke reveals the benefits of emotional expression in the workplace. Contrary to traditional beliefs that advocate for emotional restraint, Parke's study shows that teams who openly share and work through emotions are more creative and effective problem-solvers. The research calls for a shift in management perspectives, encouraging leaders to embrace "empathetic communication" for a more authentic and innovative work environment.

Something I've been pondering...

Your culture is not an environment devoid of emotions; rather, it thrives on the collective emotions that are expressed or suppressed. Mastering emotions doesn't mean always having control over them. It means developing our individual and collective skills to be better at expressing what we need to feel in order to be successful in our roles, both in work and life. Emotional mastery does not mean suppressing our emotions; it means embracing, understanding, managing, and effectively channelling them to foster a healthier, more productive culture.
