1 ECD
Activity

This activity is designed to help you prepare for a difficult conversation. It nudges emotional intelligence and self-awareness in challenging situations. Your challenge is to think about a difficult conversation you're about to have or need to have with someone...then:

Step 1: Pick Your Feelings
Choose the top five emotion cards that best describe how you want to feel during the talk.

Step 2: Think About Them
Pick the top five emotion cards you think the other person might feel during the talk.

Step 3: What's the Story?
Think about what you believe about the other person in this situation. What could be true? What might you be wrong about?

Step 4: Manage your feelings
If you start to feel any undesired emotions (white cards), what can you do to control how they show up?

2 Pieces of Content

To Inspire

Here are two pieces of content that I hope will help you see the world slightly differently and provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace.

Emotion

1. So Many Feelings. Too Many?

How to share with purpose, recover from an outburst, set boundaries, and provide solace. Amy Gallo and Amy Bernstein discuss emotional expression in the workplace, referencing Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy's insights. They highlight the importance of balancing sharing feelings with maintaining professionalism. The conversation explores the idea that sharing emotions, particularly for women, can be complex and context-dependent. It stresses the value of selective vulnerability, where sharing emotions serves a purpose and is done thoughtfully. They note the evolving nature of emotional expression at work, emphasising the need for empathy and understanding individual differences in how people process and share emotions.

Something I've been pondering...

The world's most successful and impactful leaders flip the traditional notion of the role of emotions in leadership and culture. Steve Kerr, Golden State NBA Head Coach, explicitly talks about intentionally crafting the emotional culture of his team before he discusses the offensive patterns he will coach them to run. He intuitively understands that emotion drives performance. World-class coaches (aka leaders) start by establishing the emotional culture as the foundation of their team. When watching this clip, I can’t help but think about what Sigal Barsade once said about emotional cultures at work: “Every organisation has an emotional culture - even if it’s one of suppression.”
