1 ECD
Activity

The ECD is also a tool to help leaders navigate change within their teams or organisations. Complete this activity solo or as a leadership group.

Use The ECD to answer this question:

How do I want my team to feel and not feel when faced with this change?

Step 1: Select the three black ECD cards and three white ECD cards that best answer this question above.

Step 2: Share why you selected those cards and examples of when and how they might come up for your people.

Step 3: Describe how you need to show up as a leader to help foster the desired emotions and help your people manage and cope with undesired emotions.

2 Pieces of Content

To Inspire

Here are two pieces of content that I hope will help you see the world slightly differently and provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace.

1. Why We Should Be Disagreeing More at Work
by Amy Gallo

We’ve come to equate saying “I see it differently” or “I don’t agree” with being angry, rude, or unkind, so it makes most people horribly uncomfortable. Disagreements are an inevitable, normal, and healthy part of relating to other people. There is no such thing as a conflict-free work environment. And you shouldn’t want to work in one. Disagreements – when managed well – have lots of positive outcomes, such as better work products, opportunities to learn and grow, better relationships, and a more inclusive work environment. To reap these benefits, you have to get over any fear you have of conflict.

2. The psychological and financial impacts of an emotional culture of anxiety and its antidote, an emotional culture of companionate love

Anxiety is an increasingly common problem in society, including at work, yet the effects of an emotional culture of anxiety remain unexplored. This research paper offers a new lens on anxiety in the workplace, examining its collective enactment in the form of an emotional culture of anxiety. This study examines the implications of an emotional culture of anxiety for psychological and financial outcomes within a poorly performing healthcare organisation. It also examines whether an emotional culture of companionate love, which helps people “calm and connect”, can counteract the negative effects of an emotional culture of anxiety.

Something I've been pondering...

“How do our values hinder us? We rarely ask ourselves this question. It almost threatens everything I've been taught about values. I rarely hear anyone ask this question. Why do you think that is? I've been asking myself this question a lot lately. As my life changes and evolves, it's helping me acknowledge that my values (and beliefs) are more fluid than I feel comfortable with. While our values can be a force for good, they can also hold us back. The hardest part is recognising when they hinder us."

Sarah Leberman MNZM is one of New Zealand's most influential leaders. She believes that leadership is not about the title. Everyone can exercise leadership. We've been conditioned over many years to behave in a certain way and many leaders are hesitant to embrace emotion because in her life it was seen as a weakness to show emotion. But it's Ok to be compassionate and show empathy and be strong. You can show emotion and be an excellent leader. Emotional leadership is all about getting to know your people as people first.
