What If Emotions Aren’t What We Think?

Apr 16, 2025

1 ECD
Activity

An simple ECD activity for exploring and defining how you turn up as a leader each day.

Use the ECD to answer this question: How do I want others to feel based on my leadership presence?

Step 1: Select the 3-5 black ECD cards you want people to feel based on your presence as a leader

Step 2: Select 3-5 white ECD cards that best describe how you don't want people to feel based on your presence as a leader

Step 3: List three-five ways you need to turn up as a leader each day in your team to help your people experience the pleasant emotions and experience less of the unpleasant emotions you selected.

Bonus steps:

  1. Reflect on your past experiences as a leader and identify how you may have unintentionally made people feel in the past based on your presence.

  2. Consider the impact of your non-verbal communication and body language on the emotions of others and work on improving them to align with the emotions you want to evoke.

  3. Ask for feedback from your team members to see if they are experiencing the emotions you want them to feel, and if not, make changes in your leadership style accordingly.

  4. Set emotional intelligence goals for yourself as a leader and actively work on developing skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and active listening.

2 Pieces of Content

To Inspire

Here are two bits of content that I hope will help you see the world in a slightly different way. To provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace. Hope you enjoy.

1. The power of rituals in the workplace

Rituals are any act that is assigned meaning, is carried out at regular intervals, and goes beyond just its practical purpose. They can be as simple as a daily dom post crossword in the lunchroom, or a birthday month morning tea shout. They help to create a sense of belonging and cohesion in the workplace, and can be very helpful in ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently. The most impactful and effective team rituals ar eones that connect directly back to your purpose, mission, vision, emotional culture, values, behaviours etc. What work place rituals do you have in your team?

2. Become an Emotion Scientist in 2023

Dr Marc Brackett, Author of Permission to Feel, challenges us to approach emotions with curiosity, empathy, and a scientific mindset instead of with quick assumptions or judgments. His challenge to us is to become Emotion Scientists who listen to others, reflect on their own emotions, and evaluate different ways of handling them.Emotion Scientists are aware of their own biases and seek to understand others' emotions objectively. By adopting this mindset, you can learn more about your own and others' emotions, improve your relationships, and become a more compassionate person.

Anticipate Problems With a Pre-Mortem

We love this team Scenario planning activity from NOBL! Scenario planning is a process of identifying potential problems and brainstorming solutions before a project is complete. It helps to create a culture of risk-taking and prevents complacency or fear of speaking out.

Something I've been pondering...

"I think resolutions and goals have been unfairly thrown into the personal and professional development scrap heap. I've read countless posts about how goals and resolutions don't work. But they can (and do for many). It's our discipline (or lack thereof) that needs to be interrogated. Imagine what might happen if we put as much attention on building more discipline (and better systems) rather than trying to create something new and shiny to replace goals and resolutions."
