What If Emotions Aren’t What We Think?

Apr 16, 2025

1 ECD Prototype
Activity

Beautiful ECD Question: How did you feel working for your best boss and working for your worst boss?

Step 1: Think about the best boss you ever worked for.

Step 2: Select 3-5 ECD cards (either black or white) that best describe how you felt, and share a story about why you felt that way working for that boss.

Step 3: Think about the worst boss you ever worked for.

Step 4: Select 3-5 ECD cards (either black or white) that best describe how you felt, and share a story about why you felt that way working for that boss.

2 Pieces of Content To Inspire

Here are two bits of content that I hope will help you see the world in a slightly different way. To provoke you to do the work that matters to humanise the workplace. Hope you enjoy.

1. Understanding and Overcoming Belonging Uncertainty, By Geoffrey Cohen

"We can all become vulnerable to doubts about our belonging at any given moment, depending on the situations we find ourselves in and how we interpret them. Greg Walton and I coined the term “belonging uncertainty” to refer to the state of mind in which one suffers from doubts about whether one is fully accepted in a particular environment or ever could be."

2. How to have better arguments, by Scott Aikin & John Casey

Be a better facilitator – 7 Fundamentals of Facilitation

Leading a group of people to a productive outcome through conversation can be tricky. Whether it’s in the boardroom, in a community group, or at the dinner table, delicately balancing a collection of personalities and egos is rough—even for the most seasoned leader.

Something I've been pondering...

"The ‘soft skills’ evangelists fell into a trap of binaries. Framing up soft skills as the opposite of hard skills meant the wrong the reference point was set and soft skills suddenly came to be in competition with hard skills and the opposite. In reality, it’s never been one or the other but been more of a spectrum between technical skills and relational skills. I’ve always thought ‘relational skills’ better captured the ideas we’ve been calling soft skills. Life is relational. We don’t exist without relationships. All the so called ‘soft skills’ are the essential skills required to develop, foster and grow relationships (and self). Which ultimately helps us become better technically."
